Healthy Living

One of my aims for this year was to exercise a little more and eat a little less. The cold weather threw a spanner in the works because I just wanted to hibernate and that meant no exercise and more comfort food, but this morning I decided that I needed to get back into the swing of things and with the help of this new app for my phone I'm hoping that I can keep it up.

This link takes you to the website for more details - my fitness pal

Now I'm not one for fad diets, healthy eating with moderate exercise is the way to go so although this app is a calorie counter I shan't be taking it to the extreme.
You enter you details, weight, height, age etc and then your goal weight and the amount you would like to lose each week. The app then works out how many calories you are allowed each day and then you add your food intake throughout the day which gets taken off your total and any exercise that you do is calculated in calories and is added back on. The fun part is scanning the bar codes of your food to add up your calories. As I said before I am just using this as a guide to see what I do eat but I was very surprised to find that 1 custard cream is 56 calories and if you're like me I can munch my way through 3 or 4 with a cup of tea. Hopefully the novelty of this app won't wear off too quickly and although the app told me if I did as well as I did today eating only 1209 calories and exercising for 20 minutes I will reach my goal in 5 weeks I don't think that is going to happen as Paul and I are out for breakfast again this week. Healthy living not starving is my motto!

  1. sounds like a good app! Do you need to have an iphone for it? I know what you mean about the weather, I had started going out for walks in December and then it turned just far too cold and far too dark and it sort of stopped. But I did go to Pilates last week and promise that I will go again tomorrow.

  2. My Fitness Pal is a great tool - I just used the online version without bothering with the phone app. There are lots of supportive groups too on their forums. And all Free as well. :)

  3. I use calorie counting, I have a paper chart which I fill in daily (however on the odd day that I eat too much I just cross that day out and forget it!). I too rather gave up on the exercise when we had the snow, I mostly go out walking each day and we have an exercise bike in the garage, but its very cold in there! Keep up the good work.
    Joy xx

  4. You are doing it the right way, good luck with your goal.

  5. Know what you mean about winter hibernation! The advantage/downside of having dogs is that no matter the weather, they need the exercise - and a human to accompany them!
    Ooh, custard creams... yum ;-)
All the best with your endeavour, you have absolutely the right attitude towards it.
    Happy Tuesday

  6. Ooohhh, I soo need to loose a bit of weight, but can't follow diets....I'm far too greedy!! So I have decided to walk the dog for longer, and replace my mid morning tea with a cup of soup, as you can't dip custard creams into this!!! Good luck with your 'Fitness pal' !! :)

  7. I use this app and find it useful. I found myself noticing that although I didn't always eat all my calories I consumed a lot of fat which isn't helpful. I made a small change by now walking 20 minutes to the train station and I get to save money too! Almost like a gym paying me!

I would love to hear your thoughts and comments on my blog and I will try to answer as many as I can. thanks Tracy
